EMMA CORRIN USED WILLY WONKA AS INSPIRATION FOR NEW ROLE

Willy Wonka was one of the best villains of all time, according to Emma Corrin, who chose Roald Dahl’s character as inspiration for a dark new role.

The eccentric chocolate factory owner, played on screen by Gene Wilder in the 1971 adaptation and by Johnny Depp in the 2005 update, has long been the subject of debate.

One fan theory brands him a ‘serial killer’ for disposing of four children on his factory tour.

Corrin, who found fame as Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown, plays the evil Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine, the new Marvel film.

The actor drew on Wilder’s interpretation while planning the performance. “There’s something extravagant in Gene Wilder’s performance,” Corrin said, claiming that Wilder had created “one of the best villains of all time.”

“And it’s a similar energy that Christoph Waltz has [playing a Nazi] in Inglourious Basterds, because he’s wearing a uniform so he can sit there and drink a glass of milk and pretend he’s a f—ing fairy godmother.”

Dahl’s story sees Augustus Gloop fall into a chocolate river, Violet Beauregarde turned into a blueberry, Mike Teavee shrunk to pocket-size and Veruca Salt sucked down a chute.

Wilder, who died in 2016, revealed in interviews that he terrified Peter Ostrom, the child actor playing Charlie Bucket, by yelling at him during a scene – he had not done so during rehearsals, saving it for when the cameras rolled in order to elicit a genuinely frightened reaction.

Corrin accepted the offer to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine because “it is a major contrast to my normal roles – and I always wanted to play a villain.”

It is customary for actors to undergo a physical training programme before appearing in superhero films. Corrin was “so ready to undergo a huge transformation” but the studio said it wasn’t necessary: “They were like, ‘That’s absolutely not required of you. Please stand down.’ I tried.”
