THE BIKERIDERS PROVES TOM HARDY IS THE KING OF DODGY ACCENTS

Tom Hardy has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years now, playing everyone from Charles Bronson to Al Capone, both Kray twins and ‘Mad’ Max, as well as appearing in both the DC and Marvel cinematic universes.

Alongside widespread praise and an Oscar nomination in 2016 for The Revenant, British star Hardy has also become especially known – and yes, loved – for crafting singular voices and accents for his characters.

Sure, you may not always grasp where they’re supposed to be from, or understand exactly what he’s saying, but the 46-year-old has been delivering standout vocals for his roles that baffle and delight fans for years.

His most notable accent is probably that very unforgettable vocal of villain Bane in 2012 Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.

In his latest film The Bikeriders, Hardy is up to it again for his portrayal of Tommy, founder and leader of the Vandals motorcycle gang in late 1960s Chicago.

Obviously, that calls for a strikingly thick accent, which Hardy is only too happy to deliver with gusto, leading viewers to dub it his ‘nuttiest’ yet.

Here for your pleasure, we round up a selection of some of the star’s wildest, dodgiest accents that we all love to be bewildered by – and if you get to the end, you’ll be treated to the real Hardy in his real accent, trying to describe it.

The Bikeriders

Starting with Hardy’s latest vocal offering, The Bikeriders sees him return to a US-based accent, which often means a higher-pitched vocal from the actor.

Chicago is a distinct accent as well, which Hardy is only too happy to provide – as well as looking very at home portraying a Marlon Brando wannabe biker.

Some fans have compared his latest ‘absurd’ effort to a Looney Tunes character – namely Tweety Bird – while others, albeit confused, appreciate that his unique take on vocals is very much part of his brand and performance process.

‘Why doesn’t Twitter realise that when Tom Hardy brings out the weird squealy accent it means he’s going to absolutely devour a role pls listen to me,’ commented Simu, while another user added: ‘Idk what Tom Hardy’s doing with his accent here but that just means it’s gonna be a good movie.’

Hardy himself has also said that he wanted to play against the sexiness of a biker movie and instead portray Tommy as ‘a tragic clown’.

The Dark Knight Rises

‘It’s a collage of places, people, feelings, it’s irrelevant. If you understand me that’s all that matters. It’s a hybrid of wish fulfilment and shame,’ he told Wired.

He also went on to admit: ‘I think I’m bourgeois, middle class, posh, middle class t**t really. And I affect it with all kinds of interesting variants, to make myself seem interesting. Moving on.’

So there you have it, straight from the actor himself! And long may he continue in his hunt for ‘interesting variants’.

The Bikeriders is in cinemas from Friday, June 21.
