WHY GWYNETH PALTROW MADE ACTING COMEBACK IN 'SENSATIONAL' DRAMA AFTER SEVEN-YEAR BREAK

Gwyneth Paltrow is back on the big screen starring alongside Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie's much-hyped Marty Supreme, a film inspired by the life of table tennis player Marty Reisman.

The comedy drama marks Paltrow's return to acting, having been last seen in cinemas in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, the same year in which she appeared in Netflix series The Politician.

Paltrow stars in Marty Supreme as Kay Stone, a wealthy socialite and ex-actress who becomes friends with the titular character.

Speaking to Frankenstein's Jacob Elordi for Variety, the actor and Goop founder opened up on why she decided to make a return to acting.

"I felt a lot of loneliness when I was doing it in my 20s. I didn’t know myself well yet, and I was traveling all the time," Paltrow explained.

"I needed to grow up and understand who I really was, and I got a lot of those answers through my family. Then I started a business.

"Marty Supreme came about in an incredible way because our boys were going off [to college] and I was left with this feeling of shock and disbelief. Like, 'Who am I?'" she continued.

"Then I met Josh Safdie and I knew this would be worthwhile. This felt like the movies we used to make in the '90s."

Paltrow's co-star Timothée Chalamet has been garnering considerable buzz for his leading performance in Marty Supreme, with an Oscar nomination looking almost inevitable.

In our five star review of the film, Digital Spy wrote of Chalamet's performance: "It's a sensational performance and one you cannot look away from, making Marty charming despite his often-unlikeable actions."

The film, which hits UK cinemas on Boxing Day, currently holds an extremely impressive 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 90 reviews.

"It makes you laugh hard and often, and even blush a bit. There’s ample heart and passion in Marty’s messy race to the top," penned The New York Post.

The Evening Standard said of the film: "Chalamet has staked a massively confident claim for his first Oscar. If you must gamble, lay it all on Chalamet. Now."

Marty Supreme will land in US cinemas on 25 December, and in UK cinemas on 26 December.
