80S POP HIT SET TO BECOME THE UNOFFICIAL ANTHEM OF EURO 2024

A 1980s hit by German popstar Peter Schilling is set to become the anthem of Euros 2024 – despite being released over four decades ago.

The Euros are fast approaching and with hit songs such as Football’s Coming Home storming the charts in the past, some are wondering what the next banger for the football season will be.

The 1980s tune Major Tom (Coming Home) may be the answer to this question as the song has already become a huge hit for German fans this season.

The song was originally released in 1983 and went to number one across several countries in Europe. The tune has a British link as the character Major Tom was the protagonist of the 1969 song Space Oddity by David Bowie.

The song then had a second life 9 years ago when it was used as the theme tune for Deutschland 83 and its sequels.

It is now back in the public sphere as the hit tune was used as Adidas’s kit launch video for Germany’s Euro 2024 jersey

In fact, there is a petition that launched on March 24 to make the song the official anthem for the German national football team. The petition gained 69, 512 signatures and huge support from fans.

The popularity of this song comes as Police warn England fans not to be ‘a d***’ and sing 10 German bombers at Euro 2024.

The 2024 Euros kick off in the host nation in Germany. The first match will take place in Munich on Friday 14 June and the tournament will end with a final in Berlin on Sunday 14 July.

England’s first match in the Euros will take place on Sunday, June 16 as they face Serbia at 8pm.
