SEAN BEAN TO FRONT "GRIPPING" CRIME SERIES - HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT INCLUDING "SAVAGE" '60S GANGSTERS

Sean Bean has teamed up with Sky to front a "gripping" new crime series in which he will investigate some of the world's most famous criminals. Titled Original Gangsters with Sean Bean, the show follows Bean as he takes audiences on a "compelling journey into the lives of history’s most notorious criminals".

Consisting of six hour-long episodes, each instalment will tell the history of a different criminal or criminal gang including: Al Capone, the Peaky Blinders, Stephanie St Clair, and Billy Hill and the Kray twins.

Joined by a team of experts, the show will separate fact from fiction while attempting to uncover why the legacies of these criminals have lasted and "what made these extraordinary characters tick".

Original Gangsters with Sean Bean will premiere on Tuesday, 4 November at 9pm on Sky History and History Play, with episodes airing at the same time weekly.

Kicking off with the reality behind Steven Knight’s smash hit BBC drama, episode one will delve into the history behind the real-life Peaky Blinders gang, who "terrorised Birmingham in the late 19th and early 20th centuries".

Episode one will feature testimony from Carl Chinn, the world’s leading expert on Birmingham crime and the Peaky Blinders.

A description of the episode reads: "From the labyrinthine alleyways of industrial Birmingham in the 1860s through riots and deadly gang warfare where the city’s ruffians battled with police, to the early twentieth century where rogue street mobs coalesced to become organised and eventually united under the hand of one man: Billy Kimber."

Episode two will focus on Al Capone 78 years after his death as Bean shines a spotlight on the original Scarface and Alcatraz’s most famous resident. The episode will include exclusive testimony from the Capone family while taking a look into his personal life.

The third instalment follows the life of Stephanie St Clair aka the Queen of Harlem, a "once-powerful woman who forcefully ruled Harlem’s numbers rackets with an iron fist" starting in the 1920s.

Finally, episode four takes a look at the Kray twins and London’s original ‘Gentleman Gangster’ Billy Hill, exploring the violent rise and legacy of two notorious crime factions.

"Beginning in post-WWII London, Hill’s charm and calculated brutality in the 1940s and 50s earned him control over gambling, protection rackets and Soho’s criminal elite," the description reads.

"But as the 1960s dawned, the volatile Krays emerged, combining celebrity allure with savage ambition."

Original Gangsters with Sean Bean starts Tuesday 4 November at 9pm on Sky History and History Play.
