Less than a month after its release, the second season of "Squid Game" has already become the third most successful series in Netflix's streaming history, beaten only by season one and the US comedy horror series "Wednesday".
In the latest weekly charts (January 13 to 19), published on Tuesday, season two of the South Korean series collected another 13.2 million watches to overtake sci-fi series "Stranger Things" and reach third place with 165.7 million views in just three and a half weeks.
The brutal South Korean drama about seemingly harmless but ultimately deadly children's games is the most successful Netflix show ever. The first season was praised three years ago for its social criticism, tackling issues of social inequality, discrimination and the powers of the elite.
Creator Hwang Dong Hyuk recently put its global success down to its relatability. This is "a story that people can identify with – no matter what language, culture, religion or ethnicity," he told dpa.
The seven new episodes (between 50 and 75 minutes long) went online on December 26. Netflix is set to release the show's third and final season later in 2025.
In autumn 2021, the nine episodes of the first season were viewed a total of 265 million times in the first 90 days – more than any other Netflix series to date.
Beyond the first 91 days, Netflix does not add up its so-called all-time charts, even though season one is currently reappearing in the weekly charts because many people are obviously watching it (again).
The streaming entertainment service Netflix, whose biggest rivals are Disney+, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video, says it has 283 million paying subscribers worldwide.
