Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) is left fearing the worst in EastEnders next week when Shiv the loan shark unveils his true nature, ordering her to pay up money that she simply doesn’t have.
The popular character, as viewers know, is struggling to make ends meet amid the cost of living crisis and, earlier this month, resorted to stealing money from a factory she was cleaning.
But there are more issues ahead, leaving the mum desperate to get her hands on some more cash, but she and Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) are later stunned when they find out how Freddie (Bobby Brazier) has been making his money.
‘In her world, Freddie’s money making tactics has never even popped up, so she just think it’s quite an odd thing to do,’ actress Lacey Turner told Metro.co.uk of the storyline development.
‘But it’s good money, so I think there’s part of her that also thinks, if you’re paying the rent, you’re paying the rent. She does tell him to stop it but then when she sees that he’s actually making half decent money from it she tries to encourage him to carry on.’
Stacey’s attention is soon elsewhere, however, when Shiv the loan shark – who she borrowed funds earlier this year from to fix up the food van – comes to collect his money, proving himself to be anything but friendly in the process.
Lacey told us that, at this point, Stacey panics, but she soon receives some help from Alfie Moon (Shane Richie).
‘Alfie turns up with some money that he’s made, so there’s a sense of relief, but then Shiv asks for more money for the next day,’ revealed the soap star. ‘The more the Slaters wind him up, the more he wants his money quicker.’
As Lacey hinted at, Shiv shows his true colours during the scenes in question, threatening violence if he doesn’t get what he believes he’s owed. When asked if Stacey is scared of the character, Lacey said: ‘Yes absolutely.
‘I think she’s scared of him. He’s a very creepy man. He’s not a normal thug, he’s a creepy thug.’
Stacey is forced to use Freddie’s money to help herself out of this situation, which Lacey admitted is her character’s only option.
‘She doesn’t really have a choice and she knows that’, she told us.
‘In an ideal world, she just helps everyone and keeps everyone afloat but I think she realises she’s in a situation where she doesn’t have much choice so she has to take it.’
