Disney fans have shared their excitement at Kathryn Hahn's reported new role in the upcoming Tangled remake. According to Deadline, the acclaimed actor is in talks to play Mother Gothel in the live-action movie, which was first announced back in 2024.
The original 2010 animation tells the story of Rapunzel, a princess whose hair possesses magical healing abilities. As a baby, Rapunzel is abducted and raised by the manipulative Mother Gothel who keeps her trapped in a tall tower, while using her magic to stay youthful.
Despite being the main antagonist, Gothel is a firm favourite among viewers, thanks to her snarky, sassy attitude and her theatrical ballad 'Mother Knows Best'. Fans praised reports of Hahn's casting on Reddit, branding her the "perfect" choice for the role.
"I would LOVE for Kathryn to play Mother Gothel. She has the wits, the witchy vibes, the villain aura all over her. She would be perfect!" wrote one, while a second said: "Just cast her already, Disney. You know and we know that she's the one."
"I mean.... Yeah. That's basically a perfect choice," agreed a third.

Some fans drew parallels between Mother Gothel and Hahn's popular Marvel character Agatha Harkness, who was revealed as a witch in WandaVision before receiving her own spooky spin-off Agatha All Along.
"This is perfect casting. She was Gothel all along. No notes," said one, with another adding: "She's getting type casted as a witch. But. This is absolutely perfect so keep it up."

Prior to Hahn, fellow Marvel star Scarlett Johansson was also rumored for the role of Mother Gothel, but reportedly withdrew from consideration due to potential scheduling conflicts.
Meanwhile, the live-action movie recently announced Teagan Croft as main protagonist Rapunzel (previously voiced by Mandy Moore). The Titans actor will star opposite Zombies' Milo Manheim, who will be playing lovable rogue Flynn Rider (previously voiced by Zachary Levi).
The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey will be directing the project, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson penning the script. Kristin Burr, who produced the hugely anticipated sequel Freakier Friday, will serve as producer.
The Tangled live-action adaptation doesn't have a release date yet.
