NETFLIX NOW STREAMING THREE 'MASTERPIECES' BY THE DIRECTOR OF 'ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF THE YEAR'

Netflix is home to three must-watch films directed by the filmmaker behind the latest big screen sci-fi blockbuster that could be one of the best films of the year.

Mickey 17 is in cinemas now and stars Robert Pattinson as an expendable worker employed to do fatal tasks on a dangerous expedition in space.

Whenever he dies, a new version of his body is printed out using advanced technology. But things go sideways when he discovers another Mickey has been printed prematurely.

Directed by acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, critics are raving about the darkly comedic and inventive new thriller.

It’s currently number 10 on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of best films of 2025 so far. One five-star Letterboxd review claimed it was an Oscar-contender that’s “even better” than Bong’s previous film, the Best Picture winner Parasite, and called it “a biting comedy filled with heart and hope”.

For movie-goers who are taken for a wild ride by Mickey 17 this weekend and are still hungry for more, Netflix is currently streaming three stunning films by Bong.

His 2013 post-apocalyptic thriller, Snowpiercer, is still held up as the gold standard for modern sci-fi by many fans, and even served as the inspiration for a four-season TV series on TNT.

One five-star Google review said: “A thrilling and thought-provoking sci-fi masterpiece, Snowpiercer masterfully blends action, social commentary, and dark humour into a relentless train ride through a frozen post-apocalyptic world.”

And a Letterboxd user gushed: “Hands down, one of the greatest science fiction films I've seen in years. Not only is it an audaciously ambitious art-house action spectacular, but also a taut social allegory about class and power.”

Bong later went on to team with Netflix for their 2017 original film Okja, another offbeat sci-fi thriller about a genetically modified animal who escapes captivity and goes on the run.

“This movie was absolutely incredible,” a Google review summed the film up.

“Somehow they made a sad, heartfelt story comedic at the same time! A beautiful story about a young girl Mija, who raised a genetically modified six-ton super-pig named Okja.

“When a multinational corporation takes Okja away, Mija goes on an adventure to rescue her friend, encountering various challenges and moral dilemmas about the ethics of animal treatment and corporate greed along the way.”

Finally, cinephiles will be thrilled to discover that the universally acclaimed film Parasite, the most successful South Korean film of all time and widely considered a modern masterpiece, is still available to stream on the platform.

It’s currently one of the highest-rated films on Letterboxd, with a staggering 1.9 million five-star ratings.

One such ecstatic review said: “Perhaps the most nuanced and merciless look at economic inequity and wealth corruption ever presented on film.

“Without question, Parasite is an uncompromising masterpiece that deserves every ounce of praise it receives.”

It could be the best film currently on Netflix, so make sure you don’t miss out now it’s easily available to anyone with a subscription.

Snowpiercer, Okja and Parasite are available to stream on Netflix. Mickey 17 is in cinemas now.
