NETFLIX'S QUASIMODO ADAPTATION SETS FALL 2026 RELEASE ON NETFLIX

One of the most anticipated French projects on the platform has been confirmed for a fall release on Netflix globally : a new, ambitious take on The Hunchback of Notre-Dame starring Vincent Cassel. Here is what you need to know on the project.

What is Quasimodo about?

The official logline was announced back in June 2025 as the project was starting shooting :

Set in Paris on the eve of the July Revolution (1830), this film reimagines the life of the man said to have inspired Victor Hugo’s iconic character, Quasimodo. As the cholera epidemic spreads through the city, he’s caught between political turmoil and an impossible love.

Notre-Dame has already been at the center of another Netflix project, the very ambitious French drama miniseries Notre-Dame, covering the fire of the cathedral in 2022. Here, we follow a bit more obscure take around the history of Notre-Dame : as the logline states, the movie is set to be a reimagining of the legend of the Hunchback of Notre-Dame around a real man said to have inspired Victor Hugo to create the character. Its existence was unearthed around 15 years ago, in the Tate archives, around documentation on the life of sculptor Henry Sibson, who said he has known a humpbacked man working in the cathedral around 1830.

Who is in the cast and crew of Quasimodo?

Vincent Cassel plays the lead ; he has also fronted the EDM satire Banger, released by Netflix in 2025. The additional cast, whose characters names are still not disclosed, include Karim Leklou, Daphné Patakia, Benjamin Voisin, Noémie Lvovsky, Sébastien Pouderoux, Eli Nachmani and Alexis Rosenstiehl. The movie is written by Éric Besnard (who also wrote and directed a recent historical movie on the character of Jean Valjean, which was released in French theaters last year) and Edgar Marie. It is directed by French veteran Jean-François Richet, who directed Cassel in both parts of the crime epic Mesrine and historical epic The Emperor Of Paris in 2018. Clément Miserez, Matthieu Warter and Candice Vigneron produce for Radar Films ; the production company has also shepherded the French comedy Family Pack with Franck Dubosc in 2024.

Where was Quasimodo shot?

With a reported €30 million budget, the movie is easily one of the projects with the highest production values greenlighted for France. Even though the crew didn’t get access to Notre-Dame de Paris to our knowledge, various local reports have tracked down progress on the shoot. It is reported that the cathedral of Bourges, which hosted several days of secretive production, will serve as a replacement for Notre-Dame (probably with the help of extensive CGI modifications). The shoot also took place in the cities of Compiègne et Senlis, and wrapped in October of 2025.
