SEAN BEAN'S "RIVETING" PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER GETS NEW UK STREAMING HOME

A "well-crafted" psychological thriller starring Sean Bean has been added to Amazon Prime Video.

Don't Say a Word, released in 2001, follows psychiatrist Nathan Conrad (Michael Douglas) as he begins to treat Elisabeth Burrows (Brittany Murphy).

However, his life is turned upside down when thief Patrick Koster (Bean) kidnaps his daughter and demands that Nathan obtain information from Elisabeth about a stolen gemstone.

Directed by Gary Fleder, the cast is rounded out by Guy Torry, Jennifer Esposito, Famke Janssen, Skye McCole Bartusiak, and Oliver Platt.

Based on the novel of the same name by Anthony Peckham, Don't Say a Word is now streaming on Prime Video.

Those with an Amazon Prime subscription will be able to watch the film at no additional cost. New and lapsed users may qualify for a free 30-day trial.

It garnered a lukewarm reaction from critics at the time of its release, but grossed $100 million worldwide with just a $50 million budget.

Don't Say a Word holds just a 23% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but has a slightly higher 49% rating from audiences.

The Critics Consensus reads: "Don't Say a Word is slick and competently made, but the movie is routine and stretches believability with many eye-rolling moments."

Houston Chronicle described the film as "riveting", while CNN said it was a "well-crafted thriller that breaks no new ground but is an exciting diversion with plausible twists of logic and an exciting climax".

"A smart script and great casting elevate a pedestrian premise to the status of satisfying thriller," the BBC added.

However, Slate wrote that it was "a big, noisy mess, with a howler at its center", and the Washington Post thought Don't Say a Word was "every bit as predictable, shopworn and unappetizing as its premise suggests".

The New York Post surmised: "With all the convolutions, this is still the kind of ho-hum movie that will allow you to catch up on your bill paying when you finally catch it on HBO."

Don't Say a Word is streaming now on Prime Video.
