'DISTURBING' CRIME THRILLER BASED ON STEPHEN KING TRILOGY STREAMING ON NETFLIX

A "very disturbing" crime thriller based on a Stephen King trilogy is now streaming on Netflix.

All seasons of Mr Mercedes are now available on the streaming platform.

According to its synopsis, an ex-detective is still haunted by the unsolved case of the Mercedes killer, who claimed 16 lives when he drove a stolen car through a line of job-seekers at a local job fair.

Meanwhile, the demented killer decides to make contact with the detective, taunting him for not tracking him down before retirement.

What begins as an online cat-and-mouse game soon has deadly real-life consequences as an increasingly desperate culprit becomes bent on leaving his mark on the world.

The series is actually based on a series of novels written by celebrated author Stephen King.

They became known as the Bill Hodges trilogy after its protagonist and each season adapts one of the books including Mr Mercedes, Finders Keepers and concluding with End of Watch.

While the books and series also feature another popular King character in Holly Gibney, who has since featured in further novels including The Outsider and Holly.

Celebrated and Oscar nominated Irish actor Brendan Gleeson takes on the role of Bill Hodges, while Succession and Nobody Wants This star Justine Lupe plays Holly.

Avid readers of King have called the original book 'insanely good' and the adaptation is celebrated as one of the best of the writer's works. It has an impressive 91% rating on website Rotten Tomatoes overall, with season two managing a perfect 100% score.

During the show's initial airing between 2017 and 2019 there was plenty of praise from critics for Brendan Gleeson's performance.

One critic claimed: "Gleeson anchors harrowing adaptation".

They added: "Gleeson is particularly phenomenal, but he simply is every time he’s on screen in pretty much anything. He’s one of our best and most underrated actors."

Another declared: "Mr. Mercedes is a fine example of something that has been less frequent over the years -- an effective Stephen King adaptation carried by strong performances and smart writing choices."

Seems many fans are in agreement as one person sharing their thoughts online said: "What an absolute piece of art. Thrilling, suspenseful. Dark, and very disturbing. A hidden gem!"

Another added: "This series is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. The acting is absolutely out of this world! Wow!!!! Every actor is unique and believable, it’s truly uncanny.

While someone else posted: "This is honestly one of my favourite and greatest shows of all time. I could not stop watching from beginning to the end. Great characters, great plots, and great long episodes. Again, loved it!!"
