It was a welcome sight to see Jack Nicholson attend SNL50. The eighty-seven-year-old actor has made few public appearances in recent years. Thankfully, Nicholson looked happy to attend the star-studded, three-hour event, which celebrated Saturday Night Live’s anniversary with sketches featuring Will Ferrell, Steve Martin, Pedro Pascal, and Adam Driver dressed as a giant hot dog. So, a normal weekend for SNL.
Nicholson received a shoutout before Adam Sandler’s performance, when the comedian thanked The Shining star for making it out to 30 Rock to support him. Studio 8H erupted in applause for the actor, who wore a beret with the New York Yankees logo on the front. If anyone knows where to find that Yankees beret, please let me know.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Adam Sandler!” Nicholson stated. “Yeah, baby! Let’s hear it for Jack,” Sandler said. “Jack made it out tonight! Love you, brother.” The two actors, of course, starred together in the 2003 comedy, Anger Management.
Sandler then began a musical performance celebrating fifty years of Saturday Night Live, including tributes to Norm McDonald, John Belushi, and Chris Farley. The performance was reminiscent of his 2018 Netflix special, Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh, which featured a similar musical montage for Farley. Sandler noticeably teared up a bit when he sang about a memory of Farley crying while listening to KC and the Sunshine Band. “I said, ‘Buddy, how the hell is that making you so sad?” Sandler sang. “Then he laughed and said, ‘Just thinkin’ about my dad.’”
Sandler received a standing ovation for the song, which also featured several inside jokes for former Saturday Night Live cast and crew. Though the night is full of laughs, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house following the comedian’s performance.
“This place, for all of us, is the best college in the world for comedy,” Sandler told NBC earlier on the red carpet. “So many people get to be funny tonight. That’s the beauty."
