The Masked Singer has divided fans after announcing a dramatic new change coming to the show's format.
Ahead of the return of the popular reality competition series on December 10, it was revealed that the identity of one of the celebrity contestants will be unveiled so viewers can 'follow their journey.'
The historic move was confirmed in a video shared to the show's official Instagram account in which a masked person dressed in a black hoodie and a face shield was seen stretching.
Meanwhile, text across the clip read: 'For the first time in The Masked Singer history, you'll know who is under one of the masks and follow their journey as no one on the cast or crew knows.'
Prior to this announcement, all the identities of The Masked Singer contestants were kept under wraps from viewers until they were voted off the show.
Fans were left split over the drastic format overhaul and many rushed to voice their doubts in the comments.
'So, you're eliminating the whole point of the show?' one asked.
Another said: 'That's defeats the purpose of the show! I like to guess along with the judges!'
'Not knowing is part of the fun,' continued a third.
'Wait, what?' a fourth dumbfounded user said.
Others, however, were more open to the idea.
'I love this twist!' enthused one, while another exclaimed, 'How fun! I am looked forward to watching.'
The Masked Singer, hosted by Nick Cannon, premiered in the US on Fox in 2019.
The show follows a panel of celebrities as they try to guess the identities of famous contestants who sing while wearing flamboyant masked costumes.
The panel – made up of Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Rita Ora and Robin Thicke – are given a series of clues to help identify the anonymous contestants.
Each celebrity has a video package with distorted voiceovers, which offer cryptic hints about their career and life.
They then take to the stage where they perform covers in extremely elaborate costumes.
After each performance, the judges and the audiences vote for their favorite and the celebrity with the lowest score is unmasked.
Its most recent season aired between February and May of this year and was won by country music star Gretchen Wilson.
Throughout the competition she was referred to as Pearl and wore an over-the-top costume to match.
