The Summer I Turned Pretty's forthcoming movie has just received a major update, but there's some bad news for fans.
Adapted from Jenny Han's beloved books, the Prime Video teen drama aired its third and final season this summer. But it wasn't long before series creator Han, who is set to write and direct the new film, announced that the story isn't over yet.
"There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due. I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans," the author shared in a statement.
In the finale, viewers saw main character Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) finally choosing to pursue a relationship with Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney), after calling off her wedding to his brother Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
Han has now shared an update on the film, revealing: "[I] just wrote it." Speaking at The Wrap’s 2025 Power Women Summit, she also confirmed that the movie will not be dropping this Christmas like many viewers suspected.
"We have not filmed anything yet. I know that everyone was hoping that it was coming out this Christmas, but unfortunately, not happening, not possible," the writer added.
Fans were left convinced TSITP would make a comeback this festive season following the series three finale, which ended with a slideshow of photos from Belly and Conrad's Christmas in Paris.
Taking to Reddit, one viewer suggested: "I wish they would drop something for Xmas...since they ended the season with a Xmas photo album. Which is...suspicious. I mean this is a summer show. Yes?
"Why weren't those photos just Conrad and Belly hanging out at the summer house instead of Xmas in Paris? I mean it could be because they wanted to show that Belly didn't give up Paris for Conrad and they are making it work from afar. But still."
They continued: "I know some think they could drop the movie in December and the cast/Jenny are lying....they could be. IDK anymore. I guess we will truly know in the next 2 months.
"If they can't drop the entire movie it would be nice to have SOMETHING to hold you over. A short 20-30 minute thing that sets up the movie would be a nice promotion. Keeps people talking before the movie drops. However, would they do that this year or next Xmas?"
Sadly, it doesn't seem like viewers' wishes have come true.
